We're Hiring!

Castlemaine is a small market farm located in the Snow Camp community of SW Alamance County (30 minutes west of Chapel Hill/Carrboro). We raise two acres of annual fruits/vegetables to sell at 3 weekly farmer’s markets and a small CSA.

For 2017, we are looking for one part time employee (30 hours a week) to join the current staff and help with all farm tasks. This includes seeding, fertilizing, transplanting, cultivating, trellising, irrigating, harvesting, and selling all the fruits and veggies the farm produces. Keep in mind there is a LOT of physical activity, long days working outside in the blazing sun or bone-chilling rain, and plenty of hand weeding. It is HOT here in the summer, and lifting 50-60 pound bags of fertilizer is frequent, as is back-breaking weeding tasks. Yes, weeding. Lots of weeding.

The position will begin in mid-March (we are somewhat flexible) and end in late October (again, we are flexible). In addition to working here at the farm, we need someone to sell (on your own, after training) at one of the local farmer’s markets on Saturday mornings. While prior farm labor experience is preferred, it is not required. Enthusiasm and a positive attitude is priority.

Finally... basil! This is the first picking from a new planting, so what we are harvesting is close to the ground. With all the rain we've been getting, (!!!) the leaves are a little dirty, so give them a rinse before eating. Basil is too fussy for us to confidently wash/dry/bag it and have it retain its quality.

Mizuna is an Asian green that is also sometimes called Japanese Mustard. It has a peppery, spicy flavor, but milder than arugula. We love adding it to soups and stir fries, and sometimes we will top a pasta or meat dish with a handful of the greens.

As a reminder, the CSA will end the first week of September. If you have any of your share boxes lying around the house, garage, or the trunk of your car, please remember to bring them back. Thanks!
